Obituary for Greig M. Williams

Greig M. Williams, age 54, of Center Twp., Butler, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. He died while in Jamaica, celebrating his 9th anniversary with his wife, Betty, while performing an act of kindness and trying to retrieve an unoccupied life vest floating by. The cause was hypoxia brought on by hard swimming and an enlarged heart leading to a brain bleed and drowning.

Greig was born in Beaver Falls on October 23, 1963, the son of the late Ronald Weston Williams and Mary Lois Makepeace Williams.

He attended Mohawk High School, then Gannon University for premed. Greig was a little high strung so he decided to join the United States Army as a Medic, serving in the Airborne Unit on the FST (Forward Surgical Team) and serving tours in Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, and Bosnia. He married his first wife and had two daughters, Amanda and Nicole. While in the Army, Greig earned his Licensed Practical Nurse and Registered Nurse Degrees. He was an emergency, intensive care, and flight nurse. Greig later attended The University of Pittsburgh and earned his Nurse Anesthesia Degree while in the United States Army Reserves. Catholic by faith, he was a member of St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church in Butler, where he was an Altar Server, a Eucharist Minister, and taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine and the Boy Scouts. On May 16, 2009, he married his soulmate, Betty, whom he still opened doors for. They celebrated their honeymoon on a resort in Jamaica, where they return each year for their anniversary. Greig took up Scuba Diving while in Jamaica and achieved the level of PADI Dive Master. They had three German Shepherd Dogs together, which he loved, and Greig became an equine enthusiast and owner. He retired from the military as a Major and continued his work as a nurse anesthetist, and became a reputable hay farmer. Greig will be remembered as a patient, caring, compassionate, passionate, unselfish, and God fearing man, and above all, he was Betty's rock.

Greig’s accomplishments included: becoming an American Heart Association Instructor and a Domestic Preparedness/Weapons of Mass Destruction Instructor; obtaining certifications in the Department of Health as a Pre-Hospital Registered Nurse, in Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support, as a Hazardous Materials Handler - Level 2 Provider, and a Certified Emergency Nurse. His professional memberships included: an American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Associate Member, a PA Association of Nurse Anesthetists Associate Member, a PA Student Representative, an Emergency Nurses Association Member, a University of Pittsburgh Alumni Association Member, a Veterans of Foreign War Association Member, and an American Legion member.

Greig leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Betty Jo Patterson Williams, whom he married on May 16, 2009; his daughters, Amanda (Shane) Schooley of New Castle, Nicole (Timothy) Scelsi of New Stanton; his step-son, Jacob Lanich of Butler; his grandchildren, Alexandria and Daniel; his brother, Dale Williams of Rochester, and a host of other relatives.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 from 2-4 P.M. & 6-8 P.M. at the Boylan Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Inc., 856 Evans City Road, Renfrew (Connoquenessing Twp.), PA 16053.
