Obituary for J. W. George Wallace

J.W. George Wallace, of New Sewickley Twp., passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2020. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, and was educated in Lynchburg Public Schools, Lynchburg College, and Ohio University. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952 and served active and reserve duty until 1960.

George began his media career in 1957, and worked in both broadcast and daily newspaper until 1964 when hired by the capital fundraising firm of Ketchum, Inc., Pittsburgh, PA. His clients included: Thiel College; Mt. Mercy Academy; Mansfield Branch of Ohio State University; and hospitals in Missouri, Nebraska, Michigan, and Wheeling, West Virginia. He also was a consultant, campaign director, and executive director of several large United Ways in Michigan and West Virginia. George purchased, published, and edited the Brooke County Review from 1987 until December of 2014.

He served on numerous committees and the Board of Directors of the West Virginia Press Association, and as state president in 1999-2000. He also served on the Board of Directors of the WV Press Association Foundation, holding the position of vice-chairman until 2017. George was named West Virginia Premier Journalist in August of 2011.

He was a member of local volunteer organizations, serving as a member and assistant of the public affairs officer of WV Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), from 1995-2012, and received the DOD sponsored Seven Seals award in 2005. George helped develop the ADBC Museum in 2002, with his wife, Mary Kay Wallace, and later published and edited the international news magazine entitled The QUAN from 2006-2012.

He was married with two children and one stepson, one daughter-in-law, and was a former member and elder of Wellsburg Christian Church, Wellsburg, WV, and current member of St. Ferdinand's Church, Cranberry Twp., PA. He was currently living with his wife in New Sewickley Twp., Pennsylvania. He was a Member and on the Board of Directors of the ADBC Museum, Education, and Research Center, Inc.

Memorial contributions can be made to the ADBC Museum, Wellsburg, WV; West Virginia Press Association Foundation; Wellsburg Christian Church, and St. John the Evangelist Parish Elevator Fund, Wellsburg, WV.

Services for George will be attended privately by his family. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Boylan Funeral Home, Inc., 324 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople, PA 16063. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family at www.boylanfuneralservices.com.
