Obituary for Dr. John "Jack" F. Farls

Dr. John “Jack” F. Farls, age 82, of Economy Borough, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 while under the care of UPMC Passavant Hospital in McCandless Twp.

Born on June 30, 1936 in Freedom, he was the son of the late James V. Farls and Garnett Smith Farls.

Jack graduated from Freedom High School in 1954, where he received many academic honors and lettered multiple years in both football and basketball. He had the pleasure to play on winning All-State and All WPIAL teams. He was also awarded WPIAL Co-Lineman of the Year. In 1983-1984, Jack received the high school’s Alumni Award for outstanding achievement in high school, college and subsequent athletic activities. He was inducted into the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame in 1987.

During high school, Jack was recruited by several schools with football scholarship offers. He accepted a young Joe Paterno’s offer from Penn State University. While at PSU, he was a starter on the football team all four years, playing offense and defense. Jack was named All-American Honorable Mention during multiple years and received PSU’s Iron Man Award, having played more total minutes in a season than any other teammate.

His most memorable game occurred during his sophomore year in 1955, when two running backs that would both become College Hall of Fame and NFL Hall of Fame inductees were opponents on the field: his teammate, Lenny Moore, and Syracuse’s Jim Brown. Jack played 56 minutes out of an hour that day, blocking Jim Brown’s extra point kick that gave Penn State the 21-20 win.

Farls was drafted by the Washington Redskins but held an obligation to serve in the US Marine Corps. He attained the rank of Captain during his time in the service. After a tour in Okinawa, Japan, he played football for the San Diego Marine Devildogs and earned All-Service honors.

Jack attended Northwestern Dental School from 1964-1968, pursuing a residency in Endodontics from Indiana State University from 1968-1970. He practiced in California before returning to the North Hills of Western Pennsylvania to open his practice in 1974. He subsequently opened a second practice in Center Twp., Beaver County. Jack retired in 1997 to enjoy his favorite hobbies: golfing and cheering on his Pittsburgh Sports teams. Jack also enjoyed membership to the American Legion and the Elks Club. Above all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle who will be dearly missed.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Darlene J. Saceric Farls, who he married on December 26, 1992; his children, Jake Felice of California, Ben Felice of Arizona and Amy (Chris) Bass of Texas; his grandchildren, Andy, Michaelyn, Jaden, Jacob, Luke, Jonathan and Christian; his sister, Kay Baumann of Ohio; his sisters-in-law, Margie (Rob) Mellon and Diana Saceric; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his brother, Bob Farls.

Memorial visitation will be held from 2 P.M. until the time of the Celebration of Life service at 3:30 P.M. on Friday, June 7, 2019 at the Boylan-Glenn-Kildoo Funeral Home & Cremation Svcs., Inc., 130 Wisconsin Ave./P.O. Box 2155, Cranberry Twp., PA 16066, with Pastor Reid Moon, officiating.
